Find the corner: Target trail
Recognize the shooting window, select a target, and finish before the opportunity closes.
Why this design: Repeated finishes arrive from different angles and pressure levels, teaching players to prepare quickly and choose placement or power.
Organize before explaining
Create several finishing lanes and keep no more than three players at one starting point. Mark a six-yard central zone and four clearly different target areas near the outside corners, leaving open travel lanes between them.
- Space
- 22 × 25 yards
- Equipment
- soccer balls · 12 cones · 4 flat targets · 2 mini goals or cone goals
- Walk one player through center, decision, target, and return so everyone sees the route and reset.
- Choose one of four target goals from the center, take a preparation touch into its lane, and finish before a recovering defender arrives.
- Use three two-minute rounds; change the starting direction or pressure after each brief question break. During play, coach only this action: Look at the goal, place the support foot beside the ball, strike through the chosen line, and follow for rebounds.
- Progression: Add a recovering defender who starts a safe distance behind and may block but not slide tackle.
- Ask, “What did the goalkeeper or open goal space tell you about where and how to finish?” Listen to two answers, then replay so players can test an idea.
Success you can see
- The player looks at the target before striking.
- The final touch creates a clear shooting window.
- The shot is taken promptly and the player follows the rebound.
See the target early · Prepare the shooting window · Finish and follow
What did the goalkeeper or open goal space tell you about where and how to finish?
Move the start closer, enlarge the target, and allow a stationary ball or one preparation touch.
Change the angle, limit preparation touches, or add a recovering defender without prescribing the finish.
Engagement and safety
Players choose their route, and the group succeeds by using every target rather than comparing individual totals.
Set targets inside the boundary, collect loose balls outside travel lanes, and keep the center large enough to avoid blind collisions. Check the surface and equipment before players enter the area, and offer a non-contact entry level.
If it breaks down
- If lines form, duplicate the goal or use two opposite targets so every player finishes frequently.
- If players queue at one target, make all targets equal value and require the next route to be different from the last.
