Make an angle: Game to four goals

Move with the ball to give the ball carrier a visible angle, useful distance, and next option.

Why this design: The ball and defenders continually change location, so support players must adjust rather than stand on assigned spots.

Organize before explaining

Use groups of three or small teams with one ball and enough width for more than one passing lane. Build a small-sided field with two goals spaced widely on each end line, balanced teams, and spare balls beside both touchlines.

Space
30 × 35 yards
Equipment
1 game ball · spare balls · 16 cones · pinnies · 4 mini goals
Run it
  1. Play one uninterrupted round with normal scoring while the coach observes where the focus behavior already appears.
  2. Play to four goals; use normal rules and observe whether width and depth appear around the ball without stopping play.
  3. Play three four-minute games with a one-minute question and water break; restart quickly from the nearest spare ball. During play, coach only this action: Move as the ball travels, get outside the defender's cover shadow, and arrive where the next pass can be played safely.
  4. Progression: Add a defender who screens one option, requiring support players to create a new angle or distance.
  5. Ask, “Where can you move so the player on the ball can see and use you?” Listen to two answers, then replay so players can test an idea.
Coach what matters

Success you can see

  • The ball carrier can see more than one teammate.
  • Support players are not hidden behind the same defender.
  • Angles change as soon as the ball moves.
Use short cues

Move as the ball moves · Step out of the defender's shadow · Give width, depth, and an angle

Ask between rounds

Where can you move so the player on the ball can see and use you?

Make it easier

Use a larger area and a passive defender, or play 3v1 to create a clear numerical advantage.

Add a stretch

Add a second defender or require the next receiver to have two options before the pass is played.

Keep it moving

Engagement and safety

Keep score only within short rounds, remix uneven teams promptly, and use at most one focus bonus so the game stays recognizable.

Safety check

Anchor or use collapsible goals, keep spare balls off the field, and prohibit slide tackling in crowded areas. Check the surface and equipment before players enter the area, and offer a non-contact entry level.

If it breaks down

  • If everyone moves toward the ball, freeze briefly and show one close option, one wide option, and useful depth.
  • If the game crowds around one goal, widen the goal spacing and ask which opposite goal is now open rather than adding a mandatory rule.
