Touch into available space · Use both feet · Look up between touches
SOCCER DEVELOPMENT HUB · DRILL EXPLAINER
Ball ownership: Game to four goals
Ball mastery · reinforces balance & coordination
Keep the ball within playing distance while changing foot, surface, speed, and direction.
Frequent touches in changing traffic teach players to adjust the ball instead of repeating a move without reading the space.
Watch for: The ball stays close enough for the next touch. Players use both feet or more than one surface. Players look up before entering new space.

Set it up
30 × 35 yards
Give every player a ball and begin with at least an arm's length between players. Build a small-sided field with two goals spaced widely on each end line, balanced teams, and spare balls beside both touchlines.
- Players
- 8–18
- Equipment
- 1 game ball · spare balls · 16 cones · pinnies · 4 mini goals
- Play one uninterrupted round with normal scoring while the coach observes where the focus behavior already appears.
- Play normally; award a bonus when a player controls a difficult ball and keeps a useful next action available.
- Play three four-minute games with a one-minute question and water break; restart quickly from the nearest spare ball. During play, coach only this action: Use ankle-softening touches: smaller in traffic, larger into open space, with the head lifting between touches.
- Progression: Add a passive shadow who follows but does not tackle; switch roles after each round.
- Ask, “When should your touch be small, and when can it be bigger?” Listen to two answers, then replay so players can test an idea.
