Fast approach, controlled arrival · Protect goal-side first · Win on the loose touch
Delay and win: Game to four goals
Individual defending · reinforces focus & reflection
Protect the dangerous route, slow the attacker, and win the ball only when a clear cue appears.
Directional duels reward patience and positioning before tackling, then require the defender to use the ball after winning it.
Watch for: The defender slows down before reaching the attacker. Body angle protects the most dangerous route. A tackle follows a loose touch and leads to controlled possession.
30 × 35 yards
Work in pairs or small teams with an attack direction, a protected goal, and a defender recovery line. Build a small-sided field with two goals spaced widely on each end line, balanced teams, and spare balls beside both touchlines.
- Players
- 8–18
- Equipment
- 1 game ball · spare balls · 16 cones · pinnies · 4 mini goals
- Play one uninterrupted round with normal scoring while the coach observes where the focus behavior already appears.
- Play to four goals; observe the first defender's approach and reward controlled regains that become an attack.
- Play three four-minute games with a one-minute question and water break; restart quickly from the nearest spare ball. During play, coach only this action: Approach quickly, slow into a side-on stance, stay goal-side, and tackle when the ball leaves the attacker's control.
- Progression: Give the attacker two scoring routes and make the defender win by controlling or passing the ball, not merely poking it away.
- Ask, “What was your cue to keep delaying, and what was your cue to tackle?” Listen to two answers, then replay so players can test an idea.
