Beat a defender: Shadow tag

1v1 attacking · reinforces agility & acceleration

THE INTENT

Engage the defender, create separation with direction or disguise, and accelerate into advantage.

Frequent duels give attackers a defender to read and an exit to attack, connecting the move to a game outcome.

Watch for: The attacker gets close enough to move the defender. A direction or speed change creates separation. The escape touch carries into usable space.

Set it up

18 × 22 yards

Work in matched pairs with one ball and clearly marked attack and recovery space. Mark a clear rectangle, add two safe corner zones if needed, and identify one tagger for every five or six players.

Run it
  1. Show exactly what counts as a safe tag, what happens next, and where balls re-enter; use shoulder tags only.
  2. Dribblers invite a tagger close, change direction or pace, and escape across a safe line without losing the ball.
  3. Play four 60-second rounds, rotating taggers every round and allowing everyone to rejoin immediately. During play, coach only this action: Approach under control, shift the defender, keep the move within reach, and take the escape touch beyond tackling distance.
  4. Progression: Let the defender become fully live while preserving two scoring routes so the attacker can solve rather than perform a required move.
  5. Ask, “How did you make the defender move before you escaped?” Listen to two answers, then replay so players can test an idea.
