Ball on the far foot · Side-on and balanced · Protect, then escape
SOCCER DEVELOPMENT HUB · DRILL EXPLAINER
Keep it safe: Game to four goals
Protect the ball · reinforces confidence & creativity
Keep possession with body position and the far foot, then escape as soon as space opens.
Short, controlled duels let players feel pressure, protect without fouling, and learn that shielding is a bridge to the next action.
Watch for: The attacker's body separates defender and ball. The ball remains moving and on the far side. The attacker escapes or releases before becoming trapped.

Set it up
30 × 35 yards
Work in pairs with one ball; designate an attacker and a controlled-pressure defender. Build a small-sided field with two goals spaced widely on each end line, balanced teams, and spare balls beside both touchlines.
- Players
- 8–18
- Equipment
- 1 game ball · spare balls · 16 cones · pinnies · 4 mini goals
- Play one uninterrupted round with normal scoring while the coach observes where the focus behavior already appears.
- Play normally and recognize successful protection only when it leads to a pass, turn, or dribble that keeps possession.
- Play three four-minute games with a one-minute question and water break; restart quickly from the nearest spare ball. During play, coach only this action: Turn side-on, bend the knees, keep the ball on the far foot, and use the near arm only for balance and awareness.
- Progression: Allow the defender to win the ball after three seconds, prompting the attacker to find an exit rather than shield indefinitely.
- Ask, “Where can you move the ball so the defender has to go through you to reach it?” Listen to two answers, then replay so players can test an idea.
