Scan before it travels · Arrive side-on · First touch with a purpose
First touch forward: Target trail
Receiving & first touch · reinforces scanning
Scan before the pass and use the first touch to prepare the best available next action.
The activity links looking, body shape, and touch direction so receiving becomes a decision rather than simply stopping the ball.
Watch for: The receiver scans before the ball arrives. The body shape preserves more than one option. The first touch avoids pressure and prepares the next action.
22 × 25 yards
Use pairs or groups of three with one ball and enough distance for the receiver to adjust position. Mark a six-yard central zone and four clearly different target areas near the outside corners, leaving open travel lanes between them.
- Players
- 6–16
- Equipment
- soccer balls · 12 cones · 4 flat targets
- Walk one player through center, decision, target, and return so everyone sees the route and reset.
- Receive a pass from the center at an outside target, open out with the first touch, and play back through a different lane.
- Use three two-minute rounds; change the starting direction or pressure after each brief question break. During play, coach only this action: Check away and back, arrive side-on, receive with the foot away from pressure, and cushion into the intended next action.
- Progression: Add a recovering defender who begins behind or beside the receiver and becomes live as the pass travels.
- Ask, “What did you see before the pass, and how did it change your first touch?” Listen to two answers, then replay so players can test an idea.
