Make an angle: Channel challenge

Support the player · reinforces find & create space

THE INTENT

Move with the ball to give the ball carrier a visible angle, useful distance, and next option.

The ball and defenders continually change location, so support players must adjust rather than stand on assigned spots.

Watch for: The ball carrier can see more than one teammate. Support players are not hidden behind the same defender. Angles change as soon as the ball moves.

Set it up

25 × 30 yards

Use groups of three or small teams with one ball and enough width for more than one passing lane. Create three eight-yard-wide connected channels with a four-yard start zone and end zone; place spare balls at both ends.

Run it
  1. Begin one group in each channel, explain the scoring direction and role rotation, and rehearse the first trip without defenders.
  2. The ball must have support in the same channel and an adjacent channel before the team can advance.
  3. Play three three-minute rounds: unopposed picture, guided pressure, then live game-like pressure. During play, coach only this action: Move as the ball travels, get outside the defender's cover shadow, and arrive where the next pass can be played safely.
  4. Progression: Add a defender who screens one option, requiring support players to create a new angle or distance.
  5. Ask, “Where can you move so the player on the ball can see and use you?” Listen to two answers, then replay so players can test an idea.

Adapt the challenge

Easier: Use a larger area and a passive defender, or play 3v1 to create a clear numerical advantage. Stretch: Add a second defender or require the next receiver to have two options before the pass is played.
