React together: Channel challenge

THE INTENT

Make a useful first action immediately after possession changes and connect it to teammates' reactions.

Frequent, visible changes of possession let players rehearse switching roles while the play remains live.

Watch for: Players change role without stopping or appealing. The nearest player acts while teammates take different supporting jobs. The first action protects or uses the moment of advantage.

Set it up

25 × 30 yards

Use two clearly identified teams and spare balls so every turnover can continue without a long reset. Create three eight-yard-wide connected channels with a four-yard start zone and end zone; place spare balls at both ends.

Run it
  1. Begin one group in each channel, explain the scoring direction and role rotation, and rehearse the first trip without defenders.
  2. Teams attack opposite end zones; the nearest player reacts to the turnover while others recover or run ahead in separate channels.
  3. Play three three-minute rounds: unopposed picture, guided pressure, then live game-like pressure. During play, coach only this action: On winning, look forward and spread; on losing, the nearest player pressures while teammates recover toward ball and goal.
  4. Progression: Allow immediate counter-scoring for a short window after each regain so both teams must react together.
  5. Ask, “What was your first job the instant the other team won the ball?” Listen to two answers, then replay so players can test an idea.

Adapt the challenge

Easier: Pause only long enough to name two jobs—nearest pressures, others recover—then restart from the turnover position. Stretch: Add counter-goals or a time-limited bonus while preserving the option to secure possession.
