Make an angle: Target trail

Support the player · reinforces find & create space

THE INTENT

Move with the ball to give the ball carrier a visible angle, useful distance, and next option.

The ball and defenders continually change location, so support players must adjust rather than stand on assigned spots.

Watch for: The ball carrier can see more than one teammate. Support players are not hidden behind the same defender. Angles change as soon as the ball moves.

Set it up

22 × 25 yards

Use groups of three or small teams with one ball and enough width for more than one passing lane. Mark a six-yard central zone and four clearly different target areas near the outside corners, leaving open travel lanes between them.

Run it
  1. Walk one player through center, decision, target, and return so everyone sees the route and reset.
  2. One player carries from the center while teammates move to two different targets, giving a short and a longer option.
  3. Use three two-minute rounds; change the starting direction or pressure after each brief question break. During play, coach only this action: Move as the ball travels, get outside the defender's cover shadow, and arrive where the next pass can be played safely.
  4. Progression: Add a defender who screens one option, requiring support players to create a new angle or distance.
  5. Ask, “Where can you move so the player on the ball can see and use you?” Listen to two answers, then replay so players can test an idea.
