A prepares a playable ball and chooses a target not closed by D.
S passes from the near end to A in the middle. D starts two yards behind A. Two two-yard far-end cone gates are shooting targets; there is no goalkeeper in this version.
A/B/C = attackers · D = defender · S = server · N = neutral · white dot = ball. Leave clear space between stations. Schematic, not to scale.- Players per station
- 3–5; use the planner for a whole group
- Space
- 12 × 16 yards per station; leave 3 yards between stations
- Equipment
- 2 balls per station (one spare) · 8 flat cones per station · Optional bibs; use agreed team/role names if unavailable
Set up, then show one repetition
S passes from the near end to A in the middle. D starts two yards behind A. Two two-yard far-end cone gates are shooting targets; there is no goalkeeper in this version. Mark four corners and two two-yard gates on the far end using four more cones. Keep spare balls outside the near sideline.
- Start
- S passes when A is ready. Begin with D shadowing; make D live only after A’s first touch when the group can manage it.
- Score
- A scores with a ground shot through either gate from inside the grid. D may win the ball and carry it over the near end. No one stands behind a target.
- Reset & rotate
- Stop the repetition after a shot, regain, or ball out. Retrieve only after play stops. After each attempt, the server becomes A, A becomes D, and D joins the back of the server queue. A fourth or fifth player starts in that queue. Retrieve balls outside the shooting corridor only while play is stopped.

- 1:00 · Show and try
A receives toward a clear shooting line, looks at the target, and strikes a controlled ground shot. Show D following at a safe distance initially.
- 1:53 · Play 1
Try the entry version and watch the main behavior.
- 0:20 · Rotate, drink, reset
Rotate roles as described. Take water when needed; shorten play instead of rushing the break.
- 1:53 · Play 2
Begin with the easier version. Use one harder change in the next round if most attempts reach a meaningful decision; otherwise repeat the easier version. Remove D’s challenge and shorten the pass and shot distance. Progress only when useful: D may recover after the first touch. For a goalkeeper version use one secured goal, an appropriately supervised willing goalkeeper, and a separate return route.

If it breaks down
- Players cross a shooting lane to collect: stop all shots and demonstrate the outside return route before restarting.
- Players cannot explain the objective: show one repetition with their roles, then remove one extra condition.
Make it easier
Remove D’s challenge and shorten the pass and shot distance.
Add a stretch
D may recover after the first touch. For a goalkeeper version use one secured goal, an appropriately supervised willing goalkeeper, and a separate return route.
Safety & involvement
Check the surface and clearance around the grid. No pushing, holding, slide tackles, or challenges from behind. Begin with no-contact route blocking; allow clean ball-winning pressure only when players can control the approach. Stop play before retrieving a ball from another station.
Every player has a named role. Rotate through all roles, keep explanations between rounds, and offer a quieter demonstration or gesture response. Water and individual breaks are available whenever needed.

Why this problem
S passes from the near end to A in the middle. D starts two yards behind A. Two two-yard far-end cone gates are shooting targets; there is no goalkeeper in this version. The available space and target create a reason to act. Judge the choice in context: A hard shot without a clear line is not necessarily a better finish.

Optional home game
Roll the ball into a comfortable striking position and pass it into a wide safe target. Use soft ground passes and an empty area; never aim toward people, windows, or traffic.
