Protect, then escape · Change the challenge
The player keeps the ball away from pressure and leaves when an exit opens.
A starts centrally with the ball; D starts two yards behind. Two gates on the far end give A an escape choice.
A/B/C = attackers · D = defender · S = server · N = neutral · white dot = ball. Leave clear space between stations. Schematic, not to scale.- Players per station
- 2–3; use the planner for a whole group
- Space
- 10 × 12 yards per station; leave 3 yards between stations
- Equipment
- 2 balls per station (one spare) · 8 flat cones per station · Optional bibs; use agreed team/role names if unavailable
Set up, then show one repetition
A starts centrally with the ball; D starts two yards behind. Two gates on the far end give A an escape choice. Mark four corners and two two-yard gates on the far end using four more cones. Keep spare balls outside the near sideline. A third player alternates in after each attempt: attacker becomes defender, defender rests outside, resting player attacks.
- Start
- A takes the first touch. D follows at walking pace initially and tries to reach the ball from the side, without pushing or reaching through A.
- Score
- A scores by escaping through either gate with the ball. Once pressure is live, D can score by winning it cleanly and carrying it over the near end.
- Reset & rotate
- Switch roles after each escape, clean regain, or ball out. Restart centrally. If neither player can move, reset instead of prolonging body contact.

Rounds that fit 10 minutes
- 1:00 · Show and try
Show A keeping the ball on the side away from D, arms relaxed, then moving into a clear exit. Show D slowing down before approaching.
- 1:53 · Play 1
Try the entry version and watch the main behavior.
- 0:20 · Rotate, drink, reset
Rotate roles as described. Take water when needed; shorten play instead of rushing the break.
- 1:53 · Play 2
Begin with the easier version. Use one harder change in the next round if most attempts reach a meaningful decision; otherwise repeat the easier version. D shadows without contact; let A choose the exit before starting. Progress only when useful: D may recover toward the chosen exit, so A can turn and choose the other.
- 0:20 · Rotate, drink, reset
Rotate roles as described. Take water when needed; shorten play instead of rushing the break.
- 1:52 · Play 3
Begin with the easier version. Use one harder change in the next round if most attempts reach a meaningful decision; otherwise repeat the easier version. D shadows without contact; let A choose the exit before starting. Progress only when useful: D may recover toward the chosen exit, so A can turn and choose the other.

Rotate roles as described. Take water when needed; shorten play instead of rushing the break.
- 1:52 · Play 4
Begin with the easier version. Use one harder change in the next round if most attempts reach a meaningful decision; otherwise repeat the easier version. D shadows without contact; let A choose the exit before starting. Progress only when useful: D may recover toward the chosen exit, so A can turn and choose the other.
- 0:30 · Notice and move on
Invite one example or gesture, collect balls safely, and move to the next activity.
If it breaks down
- Players push or hook arms: stop, demonstrate relaxed arms, and return to no-contact shadow pressure.
- Players cannot explain the objective: show one repetition with their roles, then remove one extra condition.
Make it easier
D shadows without contact; let A choose the exit before starting.
Add a stretch
D may recover toward the chosen exit, so A can turn and choose the other.
Safety & involvement
Check the surface and clearance around the grid. No pushing, holding, slide tackles, or challenges from behind. Begin with no-contact route blocking; allow clean ball-winning pressure only when players can control the approach. Stop play before retrieving a ball from another station.
Every player has a named role. Rotate through all roles, keep explanations between rounds, and offer a quieter demonstration or gesture response. Water and individual breaks are available whenever needed.

Why this problem
A starts centrally with the ball; D starts two yards behind. Two gates on the far end give A an escape choice. The available space and target create a reason to act. Judge the choice in context: Standing over the ball indefinitely is not the purpose; protection should preserve a next action.

Look in the next game
The player keeps the ball away from pressure and leaves when an exit opens. Watch a few opportunities for two players; record the situation and choice rather than a head-turn or touch total.
Optional home game
In a clear area, move the ball to the side away from an imaginary defender, turn, and dribble to a safe landmark. A partner may shadow at walking speed without contact.
