Set up, then show one repetition

S serves from just outside the near end. A starts six yards inside; D starts two yards beyond A toward the two far-end gates. Mark four corners and two two-yard gates on the far end using four more cones. Keep spare balls outside the near sideline.

Start
S passes along the ground when A shows readiness. D may move when the pass is struck; start by closing one route without tackling.
Score
A scores by carrying the ball through either gate. In the live version, D scores by winning the ball and dribbling across the near end line.
Reset & rotate
After a point or the ball leaving, S restarts with a spare when everyone is ready. After each attempt, the server becomes A, A becomes D, and D joins the back of the server queue. A fourth or fifth player starts in that queue; one server feeds the next ball when everyone is ready.

  1. 1:00 · Show and try

S passes as D closes the left route; A takes a touch toward the right. Repeat with the other route closing, then show protecting when neither route is ready.

Try the entry version and watch the main behavior.

  3. 0:20 · Rotate, drink, reset

Rotate roles as described. Take water when needed; shorten play instead of rushing the break.

  4. 1:53 · Play 2

In the first round, the opponent visibly closes one route without tackling. In later rounds allow a clean ball-winning challenge only if the first touch and reset are working. Shorten the pass. D chooses and holds a route before S passes; A may stop, look, then move. Progress only when useful: D delays the choice and may win the ball. A can protect or turn as well as escape immediately.

If it breaks down

  • Every attempt ends before A touches the ball: improve the pass and release D after the first touch.
  • Players cannot explain the objective: show one repetition with their roles, then remove one extra condition.

Make it easier

Shorten the pass. D chooses and holds a route before S passes; A may stop, look, then move.

Add a stretch

D delays the choice and may win the ball. A can protect or turn as well as escape immediately.

Safety & involvement

Check the surface and clearance around the grid. No pushing, holding, slide tackles, or challenges from behind. Begin with no-contact route blocking; allow clean ball-winning pressure only when players can control the approach. Stop play before retrieving a ball from another station.

Every player has a named role. Rotate through all roles, keep explanations between rounds, and offer a quieter demonstration or gesture response. Water and individual breaks are available whenever needed.

Why this problem

S serves from just outside the near end. A starts six yards inside; D starts two yards beyond A toward the two far-end gates. The available space and target create a reason to act. Judge the choice in context: An open body or a forward touch is not always right; pressure and pass quality determine the useful answer.

What changed your first touch?

Look in the next game

A notices which route D closes and changes the first touch accordingly. Watch a few opportunities for two players; record the situation and choice rather than a head-turn or touch total.

Optional home game

Roll or gently pass a ball from a partner or safe wall, then settle it toward either of two household markers. Keep the area clear and choose a short distance that produces controllable passes.

Use the same problem differently

Repeat a useful version; change one constraint when players are ready.
