Set up, then show one repetition

Two attackers face two defenders protecting the far end. The nearest defender pressures; the other covers a useful route behind and beside them. Mark four corners. Keep spare balls outside the near sideline. A fifth player joins the attackers as a rotating neutral; increase width by two yards.

Start
Attackers start from the near end; defenders give three yards for the first touch. Both teams then play live.
Score
Attackers score by dribbling across the far end. After regaining, defenders attack the near end immediately. Delaying and preventing a clear route are useful even without a tackle.
Reset & rotate
After a point or ball out, restart from the appropriate end or sideline. Switch starting attack/defence roles between rounds; during play the ball decides the jobs.

  1. 1:00 · Show and try

Walk through a pass from A to B. The defenders exchange pressure and cover as the ball moves, keeping an eye on the other attacker.

  2. 1:53 · Play 1

Try the entry version and watch the main behavior.

  3. 0:20 · Rotate, drink, reset

Rotate roles as described. Take water when needed; shorten play instead of rushing the break.

  4. 1:53 · Play 2

Begin with the easier version. Use one harder change in the next round if most attempts reach a meaningful decision; otherwise repeat the easier version. Attackers walk and defenders block routes without tackling; pause once to show who is nearer. Progress only when useful: Allow quicker changes of attack and immediate counters after a regain, with no fixed defender positions.

If it breaks down

  • The cover player stands beside the pressuring player: replay one slow attack and show the space a beaten defender leaves.
  • Players cannot explain the objective: show one repetition with their roles, then remove one extra condition.

Make it easier

Attackers walk and defenders block routes without tackling; pause once to show who is nearer.

Add a stretch

Allow quicker changes of attack and immediate counters after a regain, with no fixed defender positions.

Safety & involvement

Check the surface and clearance around the grid. No pushing, holding, slide tackles, or challenges from behind. Begin with no-contact route blocking; allow clean ball-winning pressure only when players can control the approach. Stop play before retrieving a ball from another station.

Every player has a named role. Rotate through all roles, keep explanations between rounds, and offer a quieter demonstration or gesture response. Water and individual breaks are available whenever needed.

Why this problem

Two attackers face two defenders protecting the far end. The nearest defender pressures; the other covers a useful route behind and beside them. The available space and target create a reason to act. Judge the choice in context: Two defenders rushing at one ball can leave the other attacker free.

The second defender protects a useful route and adjusts when the ball changes sides. Watch a few opportunities for two players; record the situation and choice rather than a head-turn or touch total.

Optional home game

With a partner, walk through who is nearest to an imaginary ball and who could help behind. This is a conversation and movement rehearsal; the full decision needs opponents at practice.
