Win it, find the other end · Change the challenge
The nearest player responds to the ball while a teammate recovers or offers a forward option.
Two teams of two defend opposite end lines. The team with the ball attacks the other end; possession changes immediately switch the jobs.
A/B/C = attackers · D = defender · S = server · N = neutral · white dot = ball. Leave clear space between stations. Schematic, not to scale.- Players per station
- 4–5; use the planner for a whole group
- Space
- 16 × 20 yards per station; leave 3 yards between stations
- Equipment
- 2 balls per station (one spare) · 4 flat cones per station · Optional bibs; use agreed team/role names if unavailable
Set up, then show one repetition
Two teams of two defend opposite end lines. The team with the ball attacks the other end; possession changes immediately switch the jobs. Mark four corners. Keep spare balls outside the near sideline. A fifth player joins the attackers as a rotating neutral; increase width by two yards.
- Start
- One team starts from its own end. Opponents give three yards for the first pass or dribble, then play becomes live.
- Score
- Score by dribbling over the opposing end line under control. After a regain, attack the other end immediately; passing or retaining possession is allowed.
- Reset & rotate
- After a point, the other team starts from its own end. For a sideline ball out, the other team passes or dribbles in with opponents three yards away.

- 1:00 · Show and try
After a regain, the new carrier looks forward or protects. The nearest opponent delays; their partner recovers toward the end being defended.
- 1:53 · Play 1
Try the entry version and watch the main behavior.
- 0:20 · Rotate, drink, reset
Rotate roles as described. Take water when needed; shorten play instead of rushing the break.
- 1:53 · Play 2
Begin with the easier version. Use one harder change in the next round if most attempts reach a meaningful decision; otherwise repeat the easier version. After a regain, let the new carrier have one unchallenged touch while both teams find their direction. Progress only when useful: Remove the protected touch and let the game flow. Keep normal scoring so a rushed forward ball is not rewarded over a useful choice.

If it breaks down
- Players keep attacking the same end after a regain: use a clear team landmark and rehearse one turnover slowly.
- Players cannot explain the objective: show one repetition with their roles, then remove one extra condition.
Make it easier
After a regain, let the new carrier have one unchallenged touch while both teams find their direction.
Add a stretch
Remove the protected touch and let the game flow. Keep normal scoring so a rushed forward ball is not rewarded over a useful choice.
Safety & involvement
Check the surface and clearance around the grid. No pushing, holding, slide tackles, or challenges from behind. Begin with no-contact route blocking; allow clean ball-winning pressure only when players can control the approach. Stop play before retrieving a ball from another station.
Every player has a named role. Rotate through all roles, keep explanations between rounds, and offer a quieter demonstration or gesture response. Water and individual breaks are available whenever needed.

Why this problem
Two teams of two defend opposite end lines. The team with the ball attacks the other end; possession changes immediately switch the jobs. The available space and target create a reason to act. Judge the choice in context: Everyone chasing the ball after losing it does not show coordinated recovery.

Look in the next game
The nearest player responds to the ball while a teammate recovers or offers a forward option. Watch a few opportunities for two players; record the situation and choice rather than a head-turn or touch total.
Optional home game
With one ball, alternate between dribbling to a safe landmark and turning to protect when a partner says ‘change’. Keep it playful; this rehearses reacting, not the full team tactic.
Use the same problem differently
Repeat a useful version; change one constraint when players are ready.
