Keep it safe: Gate quest

Keep possession with body position and the far foot, then escape as soon as space opens.

Why this design: Short, controlled duels let players feel pressure, protect without fouling, and learn that shielding is a bridge to the next action.

Set it up

Organize before explaining

Work in pairs with one ball; designate an attacker and a controlled-pressure defender. Build eight two-yard gates, scatter them in different directions, and leave at least four yards between gates.

Space
20 × 20 yards
Equipment
soccer balls · 16 cones
Run it
  1. Demonstrate how one repetition begins, scores, and clears the gate; then release players from different starting spaces.
  2. The attacker receives beside a gate, shields for one count, then escapes through either side while the defender applies shoulder-to-shoulder pressure.
  3. Run a 45-second discovery round followed by three 60-second rounds with a 20-second coach reset. During play, coach only this action: Turn side-on, bend the knees, keep the ball on the far foot, and use the near arm only for balance and awareness.
  4. Progression: Allow the defender to win the ball after three seconds, prompting the attacker to find an exit rather than shield indefinitely.
  5. Ask, “Where can you move the ball so the defender has to go through you to reach it?” Listen to two answers, then replay so players can test an idea.
Coach what matters

Success you can see

  • The attacker's body separates defender and ball.
  • The ball remains moving and on the far side.
  • The attacker escapes or releases before becoming trapped.
Use short cues

Ball on the far foot · Side-on and balanced · Protect, then escape

Ask between rounds

Where can you move the ball so the defender has to go through you to reach it?

Make it easier

Use passive pressure and give the attacker a clearly marked exit gate.

Add a stretch

Add a second exit or teammate so the attacker must choose between turning, dribbling, and passing.

Keep it moving

Engagement and safety

Use personal bests or a shared team total; never rank players by speed or remove a player after a mistake.

Safety check

Keep gates away from boundaries and require players to exit a gate before changing direction sharply. Check the surface and equipment before players enter the area, and offer a non-contact entry level.

If it breaks down

  • If players back straight into defenders, reset side-on and prohibit pushing, holding, or locking arms.
  • If two players repeatedly arrive at the same gate, widen the layout and require a look before entering.
